Revised safety improvements being proposed for Bromley streets are open for feedback until the end of the month.

Upgrades for Bromley had been part of Christchurch City Council’s Way Safer Streets project, with some of the work due to be funded by central Government via the Transport Choices programme. This funding is no longer available due to government’s changing priorities.

“Making Bromley’s streets safer is still important to us and the community and there is some Council funding set aside through the Long Term Plan to make improvements,” says Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Jacob Bradbury.

“We’ve reflected on feedback received last year about proposed improvements and worked with the Waitai Coastal Burwood Linwood Community Board to see how we can utilise the funds we do have to help create safer and more accessible streets in the Bromley area.”

The updated proposal includes making improvements to Keighleys and Bromley roads.

On Keighleys Road, the Council is considering:

  • installing nine speed humps, between Keighleys/McGregors Road intersection to 65 Keighleys Road;
  • making an uncontrolled crossing point at Bromley School more accessible, by cutting down the kerb and adding in tactile pavers in the existing kerb buildouts

On Bromley Road, it is considering:

  • installing a speed hump at the Keighleys Road entrance;
  • installing a pedestrian refuge island with updated crossing points, to make it easier for people to cross to the Bromley Community Centre, playground, and nearby bus stops.
  • installing two speed humps on the approaches to this pedestrian refuge island, requiring the bus stop on the Community Centre side to be moved further east.
  • removing approximately 15 on-street carparks on Bromley Road to make room for the new pedestrian refuge island and to relocate the bus stop.

“As well as these revised proposals, we are still considering additional things we could do to improve safety in Bromley and will consult on these at a later stage,” Mr Bradbury says.

A community drop-in session will be held on Monday 21 October, 5.30-6.30pm at the Bromley Community Centre.

Tell us what you think of the plans by 3 November.
