Visitors to QEII Park now get to see the new QEII Recreation and Sport Centre take shape above ground.

The latest photos from the construction show the next phase of work kicking in.

With ground remediation work completed in mid March, using stone columns driven into the ground, contractors are now laying the concrete block walls of the central area of the building.

The structural steel frames for the main pool hall are being assembled on site and are going up now, and the "dry" parts of the facility – the entrance foyer, fitness/weights/cardio studio, group fitness studio, spin room, meeting rooms and staff offices – have had their foundations poured.

New entrance roads at Bower Avenue and Travis Road have been excavated and filling is currently underway.

Completion of the eagerly awaited 4573 square metre facility is well on track for completion in mid-2018.

The facility will return swimming and fitness amenities to QEII Park, including leisure pools, a 25x25 metre lap pool, a toddlers pool, a learn to swim pool, a lazy river, a water adventure playground, hydroslide and a hydotherapy pool.

Other features of the new complex include a steamroom and sauna, fitness centre, cafe, studio, meeting room and ample space for car and cycle parking.

The project is just one sign of construction in QEII Park as it enters a busy period of redevelopment. The Ministry of Education is also beginning the relocation of Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ high schools to QEII Park, and it's expected they will open in Term Two 2019.
