A section of Main Road in Moncks Bay will be one-laned and traffic diverted from 6pm tonight in preparation for emergency road works.

Vehicles travelling from Sumner into the city will be diverted along Bay View Road and Wakatu Avenue, while traffic coming from the city into Sumner will be reduced to one lane along a section of Main Road.

The traffic changes are expected to remain in place for three to four weeks while urgent work is carried out on a section of the road which has started slumping.

This is due to a wastewater main that is collapsing and pulling the surface of the road down with it.

The wastewater main services Sumner, Clifton Hill, Scarborough Hill and Taylors Mistake and while it is currently still operational, emergency work is required to fix the pipe.

Emergency works have been implemented due to the close proximity of the slump to water and power mains and the potential for the road to collapse further.
