Safety improvements for Shirley intersections

Plans to make two busy Shirley intersections safer have been released.

Christchurch City Council is seeking feedback on the proposals to improve the Shirley Road, Marshland Road, New Brighton Road and North Parade intersection, as well as the nearby Shirley Road, Hills Road and Warrington Street intersection.

Shirley, Briggs, Hills, Warrington intersection.

The intersections are adjacent to Shirley Intermediate School, The Palms Shopping Centre, Shirley Primary School, Best Start Warrington and the local shops and businesses in Shirley.   

Plans for the Shirley, Marshland, New Brighton and North Parade intersection include safe speed platforms on all approaches, the removal of the left slip lane from Shirley Road into Marshland Road, a new traffic island on New Brighton Road and green turning arrows for the North Parade and Marshland Road approaches.  

While Shirley, Hills and Warrington plans include a safe speed platform covering the intersection, raised pedestrian crossings on the slip lanes, and a new green turning arrow from Hills Road into Warrington Street.  

Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright says making sure these intersections are safe is important as their proximity to schools, preschools and shops means they are used by more vulnerable road users.  

“More than half of serious crashes in Christchurch happen at intersections, and there have been 32 crashes combined at these two intersections in the last five years,” he says.  

“We’ve identified these intersections as a priority for improvements and have planned a range of features such as safe speed platforms to encourage safer speeds through these busy intersections to improve safety for everyone travelling through the area, whether they are driving, walking or cycling.
