Christchurch will bid farewell to 2020 with a free music concert in North Hagley Park headlined by Kiwi music legends, The Black Seeds.

The multi-platinum-selling band will be the headline act at The Edge NYE20 – the family-friendly New Year’s Eve party organised by Christchurch City Council.

“We are absolutely stoked that The Black Seeds have chosen to see out 2020 in Christchurch. They have been described by Clash Music as ‘one of the best live reggae acts on the planet’ and they have a reputation for rocking dancefloors around the world,’’ says Council Events and Arts Manager Lucy Blackmore.

“They bring good vibes wherever they go so we couldn’t think of a better band to help us celebrate the end of a challenging year and the start of a new one.

“When the clock strikes midnight on 31 December we’re going to light up the night sky with a massive fireworks display so it is going to be a night to remember,’’ Ms Blackmore says.

Crowd favourites Dillastrate will return to the NYE stage with an all-new show featuring some talented local musicians including Emily Browning, Georgie Clifford, and Lissel Stewart.

Emerging artists Dolphin Friendly, who are quickly building a reputation for their entertaining live shows, will bring their rock-reggae style to Hagley Park.

DJ Spinal will get the get the party started with some crowd favourites, while DJ Glitch in the System will lay down the beats later in the evening.

“For families with young children who may not make it through to midnight, there will be a mock countdown around 8pm. We’ll have lots of other fun things for young party-goers because we want them to enjoy the festivities just as much as the adults,’’ Ms Blackmore says.

“We’re very much looking forward to bringing Christchurch a great New Year’s Eve event but we are, of course, very mindful that we are still in the midst of a global pandemic and that COVID-19 alert levels could necessitate adapting our party plans,’’ Ms Blackmore says.

“We will monitoring the situation closely and will, as always, follow the latest Government advice to ensure we play our part in protecting our community from COVID-19.’’

The Edge NYE20  is a smoke-free and alcohol-free event.
