History is writ large at Lancaster Park in the form of photographic hoardings that celebrate the stadium’s multi-faceted past.

From crusading popes and rugby stars to a Queen and her consort, all are receiving right royal attention on new signage that will remain wrapped around the site during the demolition of the earthquake-damaged sportsground.

“Lancaster Park has always held a special place in Cantabrians’ hearts,” Christchurch City Council Project Director Lee Butcher says

New signage bids a fond farewell to Lancaster Park.

“Both the Council and venue manager Vbase want to share classic park moments with the community as the stadium comes down. These photographs stitch together the history of the park, prompting memories and personalising our experiences at the arena.

“We aim to leave a memorable impression of Lancaster Park via our snapshots of the past.”

In late 2017, members of the public were invited to share their photographic memories of Lancaster Park. Unfortunately, the images lacked high resolution and could not be used for the signage project.

Instead, the hoarding images have been supplied by Vbase and Stuff.

The signage on the Wilsons Road and Stevens Street borders captures remarkable sporting, entertainment and cultural moments – from Sir Richard Hadlee claiming another wicket to NPC rugby fever to a papal blessing and a Bon Jovi high note.

The signage will remain until the stadium is completely demolished in late 2019.

The “soft strip” of the arena, which includes the removal of carpets, doors, ceiling tiles and walls, is well under way.

The next big steps are the removal of the roofs of the Paul Kelly and Deans stands and the demolition of the Tui Stand, which begin in June.
