Did you know there are exciting new, local places to discover with your children that will keep them entertained for hours this coming summer?

In honour of Play Week which begins on Sunday 27 October, we have pulled together a list of some of our favourite destinations to visit, where kids and families can explore, be active and play in their own way.

Te Kohanga Taiao Sensory Nature Play Park

Tucked away on Brooker Ave in the Red Zone, this whole area is fun for families with other recreational options, including a pump track and playground, right next door. With nature-based play opportunities, a creek, an accessible picnic area and even a sensory trail this is an area you can bring the family and easily spend a whole morning.

Sensory Play Space, Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre.

Te Kuru

This Wetlands area is a fun family walk, and includes the Cashmere Stream. It has lots of space to run and explore and even peek into the stream to look for aquatic creatures.

Non-Playgrounds Play Spaces on “SmartView Christchurch”

Here you will find the Urban Play Map – where you can explore lots of little hidden gems and interesting places to play – that aren’t playgrounds! Some old favourites, some new… find something you didn’t know about by interacting with the map.

Sensory Play Space, Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre

Come and have a play at the new sensory play space at the back entrance to Pioneer Stadium, before you come inside for a swim or head over to the playground in the park next door. Designed for people of all abilities, with an accessible picnic table and lots to see and touch

Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway as a Play Trail

Depending on time and ability, you can choose where you start along the pathway and join lots of local residents and visitors on a variety of wheels or walking along the Coastal Pathway.  With interesting places to stop and play along the way including a brand new Nature Play space, beaches, fishing areas, Cave Rock and Scarborough Playground, this is a great way to enjoy the scenery, have fun and be active together.

Richmond Community Garden and Adventure Ave

Located within walking distance of each other, there are plenty of new and ever-changing opportunities for families to play in the Community Garden, surrounding areas and slightly north at Adventure Ave on Woodchester Ave. Designed by children for children, this space features a bike track, hidden nature play areas and an incredible tree hut.
