Everybody needs good neighbours and from today anyone can apply to the Christchurch City Council for a “Summer with your neighbours” subsidy to help host a big – or small – local gathering.

Christchurch couple Vince and Di Latty have been holding annual Christmas barbecues to help build stronger community connections for several years.

“Older neighbours passed the annual barbecue baton to us when they left the area, but the summer gathering has been hosted by several people in our cul-de-sac over the years,” Mr Latty says.

“Our neighbourhood regularly applies for a Council subsidy – under the ‘Summer with your neighbours’ programme – to help cover food costs.

Vince Latty is looking forward to another summer barbecue with neighbours.

Vince Latty is looking forward to the annual summer barbecue with his many neighbours.

“It’s great that the subsidy now covers the entire summer, rather than just one week (under the previous Neighbourhood Week scheme).

“It’s an excellent incentive – or excuse – to get everyone together for a party or barbecue. For us, the funding helps cover the cost of sausages, bread and sauce.

“These barbecues are a good way to welcome and introduce newcomers. Long-term residents can also pass on street knowledge to the new arrivals, and summer is the ideal time to meet.

“I suppose I am often the neighbourhood go-to person, and our former neighbours felt I could carry on the tradition. They often pop back to join us. These gatherings are a good, neighbourly thing to do.

“It’s important that everyone gets to know each other, and provide support if needed.”

About 30 people join the backyard barbecue each year, ranging from children to the elderly.

“We manage – no matter the weather – to hold a fun event,” Mr Latty says.

“It’s all about community spirit and enjoying a good time with great neighbours.”

Council Acting Head of Community Support, Governance and Partnerships Matt McLintock says a shared sense of community is a cornerstone of a positive environment.

“We are inter-connected in our neighbourhood and by getting to know our neighbours we can create safer communities where people provide support and look out for each other,” Mr McLintock says.

“Establishing a social network for the street via neighbourly events certainly brings multiple benefits,” he says.

Funding can be used from 25 October 2019 to 29 March 2020.

People can apply for a subsidy online or call the Council on 941-8999 if you require an application form to be sent out.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday, 16 August.
