Special name gifted to Metro Sports Facility

Local rūnanga Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri has gifted a special name – Parakiore – to the Metro Sports Facility.

Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox says the name Parakiore is a tribute to the youngest son of Tūrākautahi, the Ngāi Tahu chief  of Kaiapoi Pa.

Parakiore is described as a man of great strength and amazing speed as a runner, reflecting the traditional Māori existence that demanded high physical ability of both men and women to survive the transient, subsistence way of life and as warriors.

 “There are strong synergies between the skills and athleticism of Parakiore and the services that the Metro Sports Facility will offer,” says Mr Cox. “As well as being the largest aquatic and indoor recreation and leisure venue of its kind in New Zealand, the facility will support pathways for high-performance athletes and aim to increase participation rates in sport and recreation in Canterbury.

“The qualities of strength, speed and agility are reflected strongly in the name Parakiore, and it also pays homage to an important battle in the history of Ngāi Tahu’s settlement.”

The Council will decide to accept the gifted name at next week’s Council meeting.

Matapopore Charitable Trust developed and endorsed the name Parakiore with the knowledge that the facility could have a commercial sponsorship name if the opportunity arises.

Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre will feature a 50m, 10-lane competition swimming pool, a separate diving pool, a large aquatic leisure area, five hydroslides, fitness spaces, an aquatic sensory experience area, nine indoor courts, a high performance sports centre, café and allied health facilities.

Crown rebuild agency Ōtākaro Ltd is responsible for the delivery managing the design and construction of the facility, with the Christchurch City Council stepping up as the operator once it’s completed at the end of 2022.
