Local body elections  |  12 Aug 2019

People considering putting their names forward as candidates in Christchurch’s local body elections have until midday Friday to get their nominations in.

Local body elections are being held on 12 October.

Nominations opened on 19 July and so far Christchurch City Council Electoral Officer Jo Daly has confirmed:

  • Six nomination for the Mayoralty.
  • 16 nominations for City Council positions
  • 33 nominations for Community Board positions.

Ms Daly says while the deadline for nominations is midday Friday, she strongly advises people to get their nominations in early.

“If people leave it to the last minute and there’s an issue with their nomination that needs correcting, there may not be enough time to fix it before nominations close,’’ Ms Daly says.

In the Christchurch City Council elections the Mayoralty, 16 City Council seats and 37 Community Board positions are open for nominations.

A list of confirmed nominations is available on the Council’s website and is updated daily.

“If you’re passionate about Christchurch and your community and have thought about taking the step of representing them, now is the time,’’ Ms Daly says.

You can stand for election if you are a New Zealand citizen and on the electoral roll.
