Marine Parade will be renewed after the New Brighton community asked for improvements to the road.

Following initial consultation on two options, a third option for upgrading Marine Parade was developed and approved by the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board at its meeting earlier this week.

The approved third option includes surfacing a section of Marine with asphalt, as well as kerb and channel renewal, pedestrian safety improvements and bus stop upgrades between Hawke Street and Bowhill Road.

A bi-directional cycle way and shared path will also be installed from Hawke Street to Lonsdale Street, and a shared path from Lonsdale Street to Bowhill Road.

Community Board Chair Paul McMahon said he was pleased to see a practical outcome for the community.

“This option is the best synthesis of what different views from community had asked for, a compromise between improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as keeping on street parking and upgrading the road surface,” he said.

“It’s a great example of the Board and Council working together to come up with a new solution which also didn’t fall into the debate between parking versus active transport.”

This project is being funded by the Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Facility (CRAF) fund, which is central government funding for transport projects.

The Community Board will officially recommend the upgrades to Christchurch City Councillors for a final decision at the start of 2025 and if approved, construction is expected to start later in the year.
