Christchurch City Council is seeking nominations for a new Multicultural Advisory Group that will help Christchurch fulfil its promise of being an inclusive, multicultural city that welcomes all.

The Multicultural Advisory Group will be comprised of up to 15 people from a wide range of cultures and ethnicities who will meet once every six weeks, beginning in December.

One of the key roles of the group will be to oversee the implementation of the 2017 Christchurch Multicultural Strategy - Our Future Together. They will advise the Council on what steps it needs to take to make Christchurch a city that is culturally vibrant, diverse and inclusive.

“We want people from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds and experiences to sit on the advisory group and provide a diversity lens to the work the Council is doing,’’ says Council Principal Community Partnerships and Planning Advisor Claire Phillips.

“We are looking for people who can advise us on multicultural issues and help us identify the barriers that people from culturally and linguistically different backgrounds might face in accessing information, support and opportunities to participate fully in Christchurch life.

“We want to draw on the experiences of people in our communities to make Christchurch a better place so I would really encourage people to consider putting their name forward for the advisory group,’’ Ms Phillips says.

People interested in being part of the Multicultural Advisory Group have until 10 November to get their nomination in.

The successful nominees will be appointed to the group for a two-year term initially, although there will be a review of the Multicultural Advisory Group after its first 12 months.

If you are interested in being part of the Multicultural Advisory Group and want more information, email Claire Phillips at multicultural@ccc.govt.nz or call her on 941-5408.
