People heading to Hagley Park for winter sports are being asked not to park in the no stopping areas.
Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge said there was an ongoing issue with vehicles parking illegally around Hagley Park, creating a safety hazard as they reversed into on-coming traffic, and also damaging the grounds and the treasured, historic trees of Hagley Park.
"Hagley Park is an extremely busy area, especially on Saturday mornings with sports activities, people dropping-off and picking-up players," Mr Rutledge said. "Finding a parking space close to your sports field can be challenging, and people may be tempted to park in a no stopping area such as a berm or across private driveways. People could face a fine of up to $40 and risk having their vehicles towed if they park in these places."
There are other berms around the park without barriers and the Council is asking people not to park in these areas.
"There are a number of parking areas within walking distance of fields which have designated and controlled crossings were people can cross safely."
The Council had installed clear signage around Hagley Park, letting people know where they could and could not park. Future illegal parkers would be issued with friendly reminders and people who repeatedly park in no stopping areas would be ticketed, Mr Rutledge said.
The Council was working with sporting organisations and clubs to ensure the smooth running of weekend sports in the city, and was encouraging people to leave home a bit earlier than usual to allow more time to find a parking space.
"Hagley Park is a wonderful asset and we want people to continue using it," Mr Rutledge said.
"The Council's role is to balance the needs of park users with safeguarding the park now and in the future."
