Water restrictions are being put in place for Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua on Banks Peninsula as dry conditions put pressure on water supplies.

Level 2 restrictions come into effect from 5pm Friday 2 February.

The restrictions mean hand-held hosing only, with no outdoor water use allowed between 3pm and 9pm. Unattended hoses, sprinklers, and garden irrigation systems are not permitted at any time.

“The streams that supply drinking water to Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua have dropped steadily in recent weeks, and with more hot weather on the way water restrictions are needed,” says Christchurch City Council Head of Three Waters Brent Smith.

“Our treatment plants and reservoirs are in good shape but with a limited amount of water flowing into them we’re asking everyone to pitch in to put less pressure on the supply.”

“Residents and visitors need to be aware of the restrictions, be responsible, and conserve as much water as possible to prevent further restrictions being imposed," Mr Smith says.

“If water use doesn’t come down level 4 restrictions might be needed. This would mean a total hosing ban with no water use outside the house. If this happens, we may also have to supplement the water supply by bringing tankers of water from Christchurch.

“By making a joint effort to conserve water we’ll be better set-up to ensure a fair and uninterrupted supply for everyone over the coming weeks and months.

The Council has set up electronic signs at the entrances to Akaroa and Duvauchelle to advise residents and visitors about the water restrictions.

The water restrictions apply to Akaroa, Takamatua and Duvauchelle, but all Banks Peninsula residents and visitors are also asked to conserve water and report any leaks on public or private property.

“Get in touch with the Council if you spot a leak or see anything out of the ordinary that might suggest a leak. Unexpected leaks can result in thousands of litres of wasted water,” Mr Smith says.

Water restrictions will remain in place until further notice. The council is monitoring water levels on Banks Peninsula and any changes will be communicated on electronic signs and on the Newsline.
