Things to do  |  26 Apr 2024

The school holiday fun continues! Keep busy this weekend with these free or low cost activities.

Trees for Canterbury at Brew Academy

Come along to Brew Academy from 12 - 7.30pm Saturday for a Trees for Canterbury fundraising event. Trees for Canterbury is a Not-for-profit community organisation that provides environmental education to disadvantaged members of the community from all walks of life and schools throughout the region. The group has a mission to plant two million trees in Canterbury, currently sitting at just over one million.

Support the environmental work the organisation does by having a pint from Brew Academy's Karma Keg - where all proceeds from beer sold goes towards Trees for Canterbury. Plus, the team will have some of their finest plants for sale. Find more information here

City Nature Challenge

The global City Nature Challenge is underway this weekend from Friday to Monday! Dig for wild plants, spot animals, search for fungi and help put Ōtautahi Christchurch’s biodiversity on the map.

Explore our region’s biodiversity with events from city to sea and mountain-top to estuary, all while submitting pictures of your nature finds using the iNaturalistNZ app. Events include exploring the red zone, putting a spotlight on nighttime critters and getting up close to aquatic invertebrates. See all the events here.

Junkband Jam

Bring your family and try new, crazy instruments this weekend at Junkband Jam. Kids, young and old, can have a free music jam with Davey and his slightly bonkers homemade instruments such as the CDrackophone or the Biscuitocaster.

Head down to The Arts Centre, 2 Worcester Boulevard, from 1 – 2pm Saturday. In case of wet weather the event will be in the Great Hall. Have fun and make some noise!

School holiday inflatable fun at Jellie Park

Rush, jump, slip, slide, biff and bash your way through Jellie Park’s inflatable obstacle course this weekend! The course is open on Sunday from 12.30 – 3pm, plus check out the indoor hydroslide from midday to 6pm each day.

Please note general pool admission price applies, find more information here.

Orange Bike Day

Get ready to wear your orange clothes and decorate your bike for Orange Bike Day on Saturday and join in on the Orange Bike Ride. The ride aims to promote cycling as a sustainable means of transport while connecting New Zealanders with the local Dutch communities in as many regions as possible across Aotearoa.

Starting at 111 Ilam Road at 10am, follow the cycle route to Hagley Park to Cathedral Square then to the Christchurch Farmers Market. This is a free event but registration is required.
