With design of Hornby’s new library, customer services and recreation and sport centre due to start soon, Christchurch City Council is seeking community views on what ‘extras’ the new facility should have.

"We have all the must-haves planned out, but there's still some flexibility in what else we can include," says Council Head of Recreation, Sport and Events Nigel Cox.

We’ll definitely include a multi-purpose lane pool, a learn-to-swim pool, a toddlers' wet play area, a customer services area and the main library space – but the $35.7 million budget can accommodate other features as well,’’ Mr Cox says.

The Council has released a short-list of possible features that could be included in the new Hornby facility and is asking people to rank their top four.

What extras do you want to see in Hornby's new library, customer services, recreation and sport centre?

The short-list includes:

  • Espresso Bar
  • Creative activities room
  • Media rooms
  • Study rooms
  • Computers
  • Video gaming area
  • Warm water pool
  • Family spa pool
  • Steam & Sauna rooms
  • Fitness centre
  • Group exercise studio
  • Large multi-purpose room
  • Medium multi-purpose room

Mr Cox says the feedback from the community will help determine what goes in the new facility.

"The new Hornby facility is scheduled to open in late 2022, and will be a part of the network of facilities available across Christchurch so we have to take into account all the other things available around Christchurch, how accessible they are to the Hornby community, and what gaps we really need to fill,’’ he says.

The Council is also holding workshops with the community on:

  •  Sunday, 28 July at 2pm at the Hornby Rugby Club Rooms in Denton Park. This workshop will be part of the Greater Hornby Residents Association meeting.
  • Thursday, 1 August from 2 to 5pm at The Hub Hornby.
