Culture Galore, Jazz on the Lawn and community events - here's a list of low cost activities to enjoy this weekend.

Culture Galore

Celebrate Christchurch’s diversity with Ōtautahi’s biggest multicultural event, Culture Galore, back again at Ray Blank Park this Saturday from 12 – 4pm. Highlights include Japanese drummers, colourful traditional dances and performances from Indonesia, Korea, Sri Lanka, China, Fiji, Bangladesh and more. Families can get involved in a huge range of have-a-go activities, including flax weaving, face painting, soft archery and bouncy castles.

Parklands @ Play 2024

Parklands @ Play is a community event aimed at showcasing the various groups in the Parklands community. Take your time and stroll around the idyllic Parklands Reserve on a beautiful summer day and explore the different activities on offer and visit the local stall holders and car boot sellers. After all that walking around, grab some food from one of our vendors and take a seat to listen and watch some of the best local musical acts we have around. This free event is on from 12 – 3pm Sunday.

Summy Sundays – Jazz on the Lawn

Last but not least for Jazz on the Lawn - Chill out and enjoy The Curio Club and Chicks from Corea at the last Summer Sundays session. Summer Sundays is Christchurch’s outdoor summer music series with free concerts to entertain the crowds, supported by The Hits. From The Beatles to Elton John, The Curio Club takes rock and pop and turns it into jazz. Comprising accomplishes musicians from Burnside High School’s Specialist Music Programme, Chicks from Corea is an upcoming, dynamic jazz ensemble.

Curators and Makers Market

The Woolston Emporium proudly presents The Curators and Creators Market, bringing to you some of Christchurch’s Finest local artisans. Browse through a diverse range of handmade products this Sunday at this free market, with a variety of local food offerings. The Curators and Creators Market will be on from 10am – 3pm Sunday at the Woolston Emporium.

Lunar New Year Celebrations

Continue the Lunar New Year celebrations at Upper Riccarton Library this weekend. Find out how Lion Dance works with a Lion Dance Workshop from 10am – Midday Saturday. This workshop will be delivered jointly by the Qiao Yi Lion Dance Team and Christchurch City Libraries staff. You will learn how to make a lion head with recycled materials and the basic movements, then participate in a casual lion dance performance. Also on Saturday, mark the Year of the Dragon at a Family Celebration from 1 – 3pm. Enjoy a variety of Chinese traditional games and themed activities at this free event.

Jam on the Tram

Days out from the Electric Avenue music festival held at Christchurch’s North Hagley Park, Tiki Taane will play a free live acoustic performance from the iconic Christchurch Tram this Tuesday 20th February. The inaugural live solo acoustic performance will visit key destinations around the city including the Terrace, New Regent Street, and the Arts Centre in its hour-long loop around the city. Local tourism business Christchurch Attractions are providing a heritage tramcar with open-air capacity for the occasion.
