Wanted: Your creative ideas to brighten a large central city wall.
Christchurch City Council is asking for your help to fill in the blank space on the wall of the Ibis Hotel on Hereford Street.
The plan has the backing of central city ward councillor Deon Swiggs.
“The street art that we’ve seen pop up in the past few years is really adding vibrancy to the city. They’re uplifting works of art and each piece adds an element of colour and interest so it’s great that businesses are welcoming these opportunities.
“What I really like about this latest project is that the community gets to determine what goes on the wall, by coming up with the ideas, and then voting to pick the winner.”
The Council is calling for suggestions through its social media channels and online via Have Your Say.
These ideas will be collated into common themes for interested local artists to develop the concepts. A public vote will decide which artwork makes it onto the wall.
Ceciel de la Rue, the Council’s acting Head of Urban Design, Urban Regeneration and Heritage, says the project is part of the Enliven Places Programme and has a budget of $15,000.
“It’s all part of working in partnership with local businesses such as the Ibis Hotel and the Christchurch community to help enliven a blank space in the central city.”
Enliven Places aims to encourage people to visit the central city by creating an attractive, interesting and welcoming environment. It also lets people play a part in defining and delivering local place-making initiatives that contribute to Christchurch’s unique identity.
