From Christmas activities to Sumner's skate park opening - there's plenty on in Christchurch this weekend.
This Saturday is the official opening of Sumner’s new Village Green and Bays Area Skate Park. Join the Sumner Community Residents’ Association and Hub committee for a whenua site blessing at 7am followed by a yoga session at 7.30am.
From noon onwards there will be workshops, artisan stall holders, library storytime and live music by the Sumner Silver Band. The official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is at 1pm which will be followed by a skate demonstration. Local businesses will be offering food and coffee throughout the day. Head down to Hagley Park on Saturday evening for Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park. Enjoy a night in Hagley with food, entertainment and a showcase of Aotearoa performers with a fireworks finale.
The free event will be on from 7.30 – 10pm Saturday.
Bring the family down to 109 Salisbury Street from 10am – 2pm Saturday to see the new Youth Hub Christchurch. Youth Hub aims to provide everything Christchurch’s young people need to improve and maintain their mental health, from supported housing and health and supported services, to opportunities for recreation and creativity.
Stage One of the Hub includes a wraparound services block for a dozen youth providers, an outdoor activities courtyard and a supported housing wing for 22 young people. The housing wing will open in February 2025 while the other facilities are opening from late 2024.
Shop local, handmade products at the Canterbury Potters Association Christmas Pottery Market and Mount Pleasant Pottery Club Market this Sunday.
Find practical, arty, unique and decorative ceramics at the Canterbury Potters Association Market at Avice Hill Reserve, 395 Memorial Ave. Come along from 10am – 3pm and buy a piece direct from the artist who created it.
Also on Sunday, check out the Mount Pleasant Pottery studio and student exhibition while finding a new handcrafted pottery piece at Te Papa Kura Park, 140 Main Road. Come along from 10am – 2pm – enjoy a free coffee from The Pop Top with the first 40 pots sold.
The Korean Society of Christchurch will be hosting their annual cultural event this weekend, Korea Day 2024. The event will showcase traditional and modern Korean culture with a variety of Korean food stalls, Korean activities and performances.
Korea day will be on from 10.30am – 3.30pm Saturday at Victoria Square.
