Celebrate the small people in your life at Te Rā O Ngā Tamariki - Children’s Day, a free Council-run community event.

Christchurch City Council Community Recreation Advisor Shanelle Temaru-Ilalio says mini jeep rides, bumper boats, pony rides, bouncy castles, and stage performances are amongst the free entertainment on offer.

“What a great way to spend a special day out making memories with the kids,” says Ms Temaru-Ilalio.

The Christchurch event is just one of many being held around the country on Sunday 5 March to celebrate children.

“It’s all about putting our tamariki first and making sure they know how special they are, not just to their immediate families, but the whole community,” says Ms Temaru-Ilalio.

“The activities and entertainment are free, and kids will have plenty of opportunities to try something new and fun, alongside their favourite grown-ups.”

Children’s Day is being held at the Green Space, corner of 152 New Brighton Road and Locksley Ave, from 11am – 3pm on Sunday 5 March.

People are encouraged to bring picnics and make a day of it.

“There will be entertainment running throughout the event, and some food and drink vendors on site too,” says Ms Temaru-Ilalio.

Community groups will be hosting family-focussed information stands and demonstrations throughout the day as well.

Organisers say getting to the event is easy. The 7 Metro Bus runs along New Brighton Road, with a stop right beside the event venue.

Free parking, bike and scooter stands will be available on site.
