A concert featuring UK electronic artists Groove Armada will be the first major event to be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park since the February 2011 earthquakes.

Up to 5,000 people will descend on the QEII Park fields for the ticketed event next Thursday evening, 24 November.

It marks a milestone for the community and the city as a whole, says Christchurch City Council Events and Arts Manager Lucy Blackmore.  

“We're really excited to see a major event return to this area after the 2011 earthquakes caused such damage to buildings and infrastructure on the site.

“The QEII Park Masterplan envisioned an urban park complete with top class facilities and playing fields used for sports, entertainment and cultural events so it's great to see those events are now starting to happen. 

“We’re anticipating there will be others wanting to make use of this fantastic space over the coming year so this is a great opportunity to gauge what works well and what might need tweaking.

“We’ve been supporting the organisers with the permits and other regulatory requirements needed, making sure the access and parking is good and the space is safe and ready for the number of people expected. We’re anticipating it will be a great night out for those lucky enough to have tickets!”

Traffic management will be in place in and around QEII for the event.
