Safety improvement for busy South Brighton roundabout

The key route in and out of South Brighton is set for an upgrade.

Plans have been released for safety improvements to the Bridge Street and Estuary Road roundabout after the community reported feeling unsafe due to high vehicle speeds through the area and poor visibility.

Improvements include speed humps at all entrances to the roundabout, no stopping lines to improve visibility on the south and west sides of Bridge Street and pedestrian warning signs on the Bridge Street approaches.

There are also plans to improve tactile pavers and cycle holding rails to ensure consistency and accessibility throughout the intersection.

“This is the main route to and from South Brighton with a high number of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians using nearby businesses, schools, preschools and the Common Ground so we need to ensure that it’s safe for everyone who uses it,” Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright said.

“It is also used by a high number of our more vulnerable road users like children so that has made it even more of a priority for the Council.”
