Share your Dux de Lux memories with us

With news that the iconic Dux de Lux may be restored by summer 2024, we’re looking for your help in bringing your favourite stories and photos of Christchurch’s favourite pub back to life.

Do you have fond memories of Christchurch’s favourite pub the Dux de Lux? Our Christchurch City Libraries team want to capture your memories in a collection dedicated to the memory and rich history of this vibrant venue.

“With only a few photos of this building in our collection, we want to make sure we capture this part of Christchurch’s history that we lost in the earthquake for our archives,” says Christchurch City Council Head of Libraries and Information Carolyn Robertson.

A significant icon to the city, the Dux de Lux was located on the corner of Hereford and Montreal Streets, in the The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. From restaurant and brewery to hosting live music and providing great food, the Dux de Lux was a loved place to gather and socialise for many people.

“So many memories have been made at the Dux de Lux, but unfortunately, after being in the city since 1883, the building was no match for the 6.3 earthquake that rattled our city in 2011.

“In order to not lose this part of our history, we’re looking for people who may have a great memory to share them with us.

“Maybe it’s photos from a birthday, videos of a friend who may have played in a band, stories about sunny Sunday sessions in the sun – we want to hear it.

“It’s so important that we remember this period of time, and put it into a collection that can be shared for years to come, not only for people to remember the good times but also those who missed out on experiencing this local favourite.”
