Sparks is celebrating its 40th birthday in 2023 with a dazzling showcase of local talent.

The much-loved outdoor concert is returning to North Hagley Park on Saturday 21 January, with a packed programme led by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO).

“With popular Conductor David Kay at the helm, the CSO will deliver a fun programme of classics, modern favourites and cultural collaborations,” says Christchurch City Council Manager of Events and Arts Lucy Blackmore.

“A range of exciting guests will also join the line-up and the evening will be capped off with a huge fireworks display.”

Sparks is a free event that runs from 6:30pm until 9:30pm.

Sparks is one of the most popular events on Christchurch City Council’s summer calendar, with more than 20,000 people expected to come along.

“After a disruptive few years for events, we’re so excited to be forging ahead with our 2022-23 Summer Events Programme. Sparks is a great opportunity for people to get out and about, enjoy some free entertainment and good company,” says Ms Blackmore.

A range of food vendors will be available on site and attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs.

There will be a drop-off point on Park Terrace between Kilmore and Armagh Streets (outside Cathedral Grammar School).

Bike stands will be available in Hagley Park, opposite the roundabout over the Armagh Street Bridge.

Mobility parking is available on Chester Street West (off Park Terrace.)  Mobility passes will be required to access this area.
