Things to do  |  11 Dec 2020

Roll bombs, staples, gorillas, coffins, the traditional cannon-ball or even the kiwi classic manu.

Whatever your choice of bomb, Christchurch City Council’s Recreation and Sport Facilities are the perfect place to make a splash this summer.

“We want everyone to come along and make the most of the hot weather by cooling down in the pool while having as much fun as possible,” Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox says.

“And while some Councils are banning big manus, we’re encouraging them and have a manu competition at Jellie Park from midday to 2pm this Saturday, 12 December.''

In fact, when it opens next year the new Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool will be home to one of the New Zealand’s few specialty bombing and manu pools, he says.

But they do have to be done in a safe environment, Mr Cox says.

“We have a few rules people doing bombs should follow so everyone can have a good time at the pools.”

Where appropriate, bombing is allowed in pool areas that are more than 1.2m deep.

“If it’s a hands first technique, like a staple, the pool needs to be more than 1.3m deep,” Mr Cox says.

“A head first move, such as roll bombs and gorillas, are not appropriate in pools less than 2m deep due to the risk of head injury.”

Our lifeguards will be more than happy to offer you some alternative hip or feet first techniques, Mr Cox says.

“The most important thing is to follow any guidance from the lifeguards so that everyone can have a good time at the pools.”
